I forgot to add that it a seckel pear tree (or perhaps a forelle pear--I'm not sure).

I never sprayed the pear tree. I read here that pears don't need to be sprayed. Perhaps I'm wrong. Anyway hoping you can identify it and tell me how to prevent it ?

thanks for your help.

Anyone?

offhand, it looks like it could be due to insect damage. The faded lighter blotches could be disease, though, I suppose.

How many leaves is it on?

scab (fungus) or pear leaf spot (caused by fungus Fabrcea maculata) if the latter is found in New Jersey and in January. I'm guessing the latter.

You will have to use a NJ approved fungicide for either disease applied in a approved manner and timing. Treatment should be the same.

I had that same issue and I suspect it's scab. I have a honeysweet that's really susceptible.Hit it with immunox befor the spots appear.

What time of the year were those photos taken? If it was in the fall when the trees are starting to go dormant then I wouldn't treat it with anything.

I was sure with 7 responses somebody would have already gotten it by now.

That looks like pear blister mite.

I dealt with it on my sister's tree by pruning off the affected areas. Otherwise I think you want to smother them with dormant oil.

Here is a link that might be useful: pear blister mite

Hi. sorry it took me long to respond.

Murky, I think you're right it looks identical to the pear blister mite damage. thank you.

The picture was taken in mid-summer or so, not in January LOL..

No problem. I'm sure its a relief to learn that it is something relatively innocuous with a known treatment.

I've seen this damage on my Sekel pear, good to know what it is.
