Like most plants, strawberries do better with good sunlight. My strawberry patch is in a partialy shaded south side of my house. I use them as ground cover among my shrubs and flowers. They produce well, but would probably produce larger berries with more sun.

I'd think winter shade would be good for strawberries. It'd reduce the winter freeze-thaw heaving that is so damaging to them. If they have sun from May to September, that should be fine.

Strawberries do well in pots, and you could always put them in pots and relocate them as necessary.

True, but the challenge with pots here in Texas is that on a hot sunny day if I forget to water the plants they will be toast!

Our soil here is black clay, and alkaline... So I read they prefer sandy, acidic, soil. So I guess I'll have to amend the soil.

Make a raised bed, that is what i did. Strawberries are crazy growers! That started out as 6 plants, and by August this is what it looked like! A Blueberry plant is in the middle.
