I just heard a news report all of California is running a huge, huge, rainfall deficit and that the Governor is set to declare a drought emergency. California is our veggie pantry. One commercial grower who was interviewed said that he faces the loss of his trees if this keeps up. That means that we in the East and the rest of the country will also be facing large price increases for fresh fruit and produce. Let's hope they get the rain they need. We have all the more reason to keep doing what we are doing and to do it right. Mike

Yes and it doesn't look good for quite some time. Looks very warm out there the next few weeks. They better hope to God the pattern changes (right now its ridging out west/troughing in the east).

Frank, what does this mean for weather on the East coast this summer?

I hope they get some rain too. The 2012 drought we had here is still fresh in my mind. No fun. As a kind of tangent, I am concerned about the amount of commercial fruits and vegetables we depend on from CA. They are the number one producer of practically all vegetables and most fruits. And not just barely #1, but #1 by a huge margin. It's true CA can grow fruits and veggies the most cheaply and organically, but water is a big deal. As Mike points out, the security of our fruit and vegetable rests largely with California. Growing food in a dessert has it's disadvantages. As a nation, I'm not sure it's wise to rely on CA for such a large percentage of fruit and vegetable staples.
