Hello everyone, I was in the grocery store recently and they had very large seckel pears. I was wondering if the size was a condition of thinning, rootstocks, fertilizer, or a new sport. Anyone have any knowledge about these larger seckel, or have seen them as well? Matthew

The larger pears are from the west coast and I assume the size is largely about thinning because I get much larger Seckels from my NY orchard than are available from commercial growers in my area. The commercial growers I know of here don't bother thinning them because they can't do it chemically and the reward wouldn't match the investment. Home growers function under a different math.

I always thought Seckels were supposed to be small "dessert"-sized pears, but scions I bought from Nick Botner produce an Bartlett-sized fruit with a reddish blush. Not sure what it is, but I'd like to have a "for sure" Seckel on my tree. Seckels sold at the grocery here are small.

My Seckels are also very large but look exactly like the ones seen in the local supermarkets. Also taste the same. Very good pear.

My seckel tree produces small pears around the size you would typically see in a grocery store. They do tend to be more golden in color with only a small red blush, and if I leave them on the tree to ripen they turn completely golden. The pears are unbelievably sweet and delicious, but don’t store long, but it think that’s because I pick them fully ripe or close to it. When I thin out the pears, I leave two on each grouping in most cases, and it leaves me with a good crop. I have a feeling if I thinned out more it would just leave me with less pears that were only slightly larger. The seckels I seen in the store the other day were Bartlett sized like the ones marknmt described, but I just don’t think I could get my pears that big. Matthew

I bought some very large Seckel pears at my local Giant supermarket (Arlington, VA) last week. They were much larger than I'm used to seeing on a tree my mother used to have and at farmers markets, etc. They aren't quite Bartlett size, but definitely much bigger than I would expect based on experience. They were very good and I'll be buying more if I see them. I'm also planting a Seckel this spring, but I'd be stunned if they get anywhere close to that size.
