Jiro Persimmon in NJ

Hello.

Are there anyone who grows Jiro Persimmons in Northern NJ?
Or Ichi Ki Kei Jiro.

Want to grow in my yard and I want to know if it can survive the winter here.

Thank you

I grow hana fuyu, great wall, saijo, kyung bansi, and a couple others but I don't have Jiro. I know that ichi kei jiro will survive in your area, several people have been able to grow them fine up north...

I am in MD on the border of 6b/7a (actually in 6b) and grow both of these varieties in my yard. No problems with dieback so far. One is 5 (Ichi) and another is 4 year old (Jiro). Both already fruited for me and I just LOVE them. Jiro gave me first fruits in its second year and this year was loaded. Ichi waited until third summer to produce fruits, but it was worth to wait too.

Thank you both for the info. I'm wondering if 6b MD is different from NNJ 6b. It's quite cold here in the winter. It was just 21 degrees now.

I think I will start out with the ichi ki kei jiro.
I've seen many placed on-line that sells Jiro, but there aren't many with ichi ki kei. Any suggestions?

Its quite cold here too - was 8F yesterday morning. My persimmons have taken a low of -2F. I have found all my Fuyu-types to be hardy thus far; one is Jiro and the other I'm not sure which variety it is. The only persimmon I have had hardiness problems with is Hachiya - last winter it lost about half the shoots and didn't fruit (well, it oddly decided to fruit in August and had a few ping-pong sized fruits frozen on the tree this winter).

Edible Landscaping has Ichi and is a great resource for information on Asian Persimmons.

Wow! It gets cold there.
I think will go with both Jiro and ichi.

And I'll check out Edible Landscaping. Thanks!

Another question. I've read that Ichi grows to about 8 feet. Jiro grows to about 15 feet? I'm 5'8".

How tall are your Jiro trees?

You can prune your persimmon trees to suit your needs. My Ichi, by the way, is much taller then Jiro.

Thank you Olga. I still have time so I'm going to do more research and decide.

Stay warm, and be careful of the snow.
