Anyone growing perry pears?

Posted by jblaschke 8b TX (My Page) on

I'm finding a bunch of detailed information online about heirloom perry pears, but almost nothing about chill hours and fireblight resistance. Does anyone here have knowledge about this? If I'm going to go through the trouble of getting scion wood to graft onto my moonglow and Warren pear trees, I want to be sure they'll survive and fruit in my low-chill zone 8B. :-)

Cummin's Nursery has a nice page on Perry pear varieties. You could contact them to find out which varieties would be best for your area and disease issues I'd think.

Thanks Patty. I've sent Dr. Cummins a message, but no reply yet. They list the pears' scab resistance, but not fireblight, which is a bigger concern for me here. :-)

Good luck. If you don't hear back right away, give them a call. I'm sure they're up to their elbows in the bareroot season, so they may be slow in responding to emails.
