How late can you graft ?

I was going to graft my pear tree this year. But recently received an email from the nursery I ordered some scions from said that they would not be able to send them until the end of march due to weather. I am startng to see leaves sprouting on my tree. What is the latest you can graft? I live in EL Paso texas.

It's hot in your part of Texas by then? I think you are fine though. the scion must be dormant, but not the rootstock/host tree. wrap the graft tight with parafilm and maybe shade it for a week and you'll be fine. But get out there the day the scion arrives it will be wanting to break dormancy due to the time spent warm in the PO system
