How to deal with buds when doing a cleft graft?

Is it better to graft in a bud free area?

With most of the scion wood I have that is not an option.

Just remove the bud? Rub it off? Cut it off?

Clueless.

I go ahead and pretend they're not there. It's nice to have 1 1/2 inch or more to work with, but don't let a wayward bud stop you from using the scion. Lots of times the buds are packed in tighter than you would like, but should still be useable.
