Does any body know what aftercare newly leafed out nut grafts need? It will be soon time to pot them on, and I have been told to baby them, but was hoping some one else could shed some light on how to baby them. They are sweet chestnut grafts.
jocelyn: The primary thing that comes to mind is to protect against wind damage until the grafts are strong. This could be a windbreak or bamboo stakes to support the new growth. They would do really well under a layer of row cover.
Thanks fruitnut. They are not big enough yet for that, but I'll keep that in mind when it's time to plant them outside. I'm looking at getting them from 1/2 inch high to a 3 gallon pot, without losing the graft. Some folks on another list have suggested putting a clear glass bowl over them when first potted on, so I suppose it's a lot like your row cover suggestion when they are bigger.
