Multiple papayas growing together

Does anyone do this and wait until you know the sex of the papaya tree to cut away the extras?

I'm letting 3 grow within inches of each other, trying to ensure I get a female tree from that spot. But it takes a while to learn the gender. Will it inhibit the growth of the trees too much to wait that long?

You won't know what the gender is until they flower. Having them in close proximity should be enough, you don't need to have them in the same spot. Plant them a foot apart if you can.
