Where do you buy your new trees?

vaherbmom

The nursery where I have always previously purchased my fruit trees had such a huge price increase this year that I am looking for a new source.

Any recommendations?

thanks

I have been very pleased with Cummins nursery in western new york. A family run business , they are friendly ,courteous and informative and they do not mind small orders. And of course partly responsible for the Geneva series rootstock.Look them up on the web.

    Vaherbmom-
Both Cummins and Adams County Nursery are two of my favorite places.
Another thing to do... any nursery that you're thinking of buying from, check them out first at Garden Watchdog. Just do a Google search on the word "Scoop" and then the name of the nursery in question. So in this case, Google "Scoop Adams County Nursery".

I'd contact edible landscape, and Michael McConkey. I think he has a few fruit trees up there in Afton VA.
Very nice guy and really into unusual fruits and berries.
Also he is in your own state. I had a chance to visit that place and he is for real.

Home Depot - but check for tree's preferred environment (zoning and chill for your area). Also go early for best selections.

Having worked in one of the 'Big Box' retailers, I can tell you that the staff usually knows nothing about fruit trees or berries. Their main concern is not upsetting the customer or getting called to the office.
If you do get one of those plastic bagged trees, about 95% of the roots have been cut at time of digging.
The varieties are not chosen for your particular climate, but at a main office in LA or Midwest. Often the labels are wrong, and you will not be told what rootstock is used, so it is anyone's guess how big the tree will get.
The care of the plastic bag trees is abysmal and they stay in the bag until close out sale in May.
If you wait for the close out sale, most of the stone fruits are dead or dying.
When you get something for nothing.....
    It is usually worth it.

Great summary boizeau. I spent hundreds of dollars on "great deals" on plants at Home Depot before I realized I was in fact getting ripped off because none of them ever made it.

Some other good fruit tree nurseries not mentioned above include Raintree, White Oak Nursery (need to write for catalog), Big Horse Creek Farm, Fedco, etc.

I must have gotten lucky at Home Depot. I purchased 6 trees from them and all had masses of roots, were big, very healthy with excellent branching structure. But then again, I got them right as they were unloading them and got pick of the litter so to speak.

Of the two that have produced fruit so far (they are still young) the fruit has been true to type.

    jmsimpson9 -

That makes 2 of us - because I've had good success with HD so far.

In fact, I bought 4 new low-chills a few months ago - all blossomed out already.

Yesterday, I shopped there for a string trimmer - thought I'd check the bare root fruit tree section. They were already sold out. If what some say is true, that adds up to a lot of unhappy folks, cuz those trees disappeared FAST.

I'd be interested in more comments about HD on this forum. I've had bad luck with other nurseries - root bound trees, trees not breaking dormancy, etc.

One "famous" nursery took my money for seeds some years ago, filed bankruptcy, and never did have the courtesy to answer my letters, phone calls, e-mails, etc. Since then, I stick with the local folks whenever possible.

Well I have made a purchase or three from Home Depot over the years. I have purchased tomatoes that where not as advertised but I still buy there.

Last year I purchased a Nectarine tree that has the same low chill requirements as my Florida Prince Peach tree. I don't remember the name off the top of my head and its dark out so I can't name the variety. Funny thing is the Florida Prince broke dormancy 3 weeks ago and as of yet there is no sign that the Nectarine is going to break dormancy any time soon.
