Any Cherry tree for heavy wet clay ?

Posted by nyboy none (My Page) on

Growing up we had a large cherry tree in front yard. Nothing said spring like the tree in flower. I live in zone 5 on wetlands. Is there any cherry tree that would grow in these conditions? I really have my heart set on a cherry tree for my front yard. Thanks

Just build a raised bed at least 1ft high you should be ok. Van, Utah Giant, sweet Rainer, bing are all good.

You didn't mention anything about fruit. Are you referring to a flowering cherry, or did you want fruit, too? Do other people in your area grow sweet cherries? There may be factors to consider other than your soil. The varieties mentioned above are all fine varieties, but all need another variety for cross-pollination. There are a few self-pollenizing sweet cherries.

I have a Stella growing in my heavy wet clay. The tree is highly vigorous. Sweet cherry trees get quite large, if that's what you're looking for, although it makes it near impossible to pick the fruit growing so high.

Stellas claim to be self-fertile, though I found I didn't get a decent crop until I got another variety.

You need to be concerned with the rootstock. Do not plant Mahaleb on wet ground.Mazzard would be better. You need to check out Gissela or krmysk(spelling?) rootstocks. If you find a rootstock that is compatible with your site any cherry that suits your climate will work.
