Planting trees from seeds

Posted by melvinn WV (My Page) on

I inquired on this topic a couple weeks ago and appreciate the responses.

I have a gallon bag of chestnuts in my fridge that I was going to plant. I happened to look at them the other day and behold, nearly all of them are sprouting. At what point should I put them in dirt? and should I wait until spring to put them outside? I imagine there is probably over 100.
Thanks
Kevin

If your ground is not frozen and conditions allow you to plant them now, I'd do so.

Be sure to mulch them and provide protection from predation (if necessary).

You can pot them now and grow them in a sunny window like any house plant , if you like. They will have a little size on them by spring, and they are not hard to harden off for out planting. I have quite a forest on the kitchen table right now, sweet chestnuts and pears, mostly. Deep pots are best for trees, for example, a 2 l milk jug with a few holes in the bottom.
