| We got snow again the other day Last weekend From Febr.16 Just took the first pink apple juice in from under the snow, these were from the Red Wonder and some of my seedling apples, also pink, about the size of Trailman Crab. This juice I really like, it's got a nice tangy bite to it but still sweet, checked Brix, around 10.2 Looking into the fridge, on the right is the pink juice, on the left, Evans cherry from the keg.

| Nice pictures Konrad. Here's one of the two I have.Some Aphid problems earlier and an unexplainable loss of leaves last year,which the plant is still recovering from.Some Blueberries are photo-bombing on the left. These are the Japanese Haskap.The other plant ripened earlier and had the more common elongated fruit.They were also somewhat sweeter.I'm finding that leaving the berries on until just a touch will make them fall improves the taste. | Just read some of your other post. Looks like your going to have to start hunting moose. Those wolves look healthy. It must get noisy at night by your place. They know where the moose are and check there health from time to time. I saw an excellent show called battlefield wolf. you must love living up there. I like the colder weather when I don't have to frame houses in it. We work all winter long and cut off at -25. Of course Im talking wind chill down here in lower Michigan. I bet you have some good fishing by you. I would live off the land too. I kind of do already down here. I have lots of deer. Wait till that bull wants to rub his antlers! |

| Excellent konrad! i just managed to get 4 haskap bushes this year (2 borialis 1 cinderella and 1 honeybee). Have to wait for next year for fruit! Mrsg bob bohrs from u of sask says " a mix of wild blueberry, raspberry and something i cant quite put my finger on". Ive read most people seem to taste wild bluevberry and something else many people cant describe. These are "new" plants here, besides the wild ones that are rare here, so ive never tried them myself... |

How many hrs of direct sun do they get?<< From other thread, orchard pictures 2012 About 4m apart from row to row and about 3m in the row from tree to tree, this was just a guesstimate for my harsh climate, trees not growing all that huge, using my own seedling root stock, collected seeds from Siberian type crab apple. All the stars have lined up correctly for a good Apricot crop in Edmonton, happens about one's in 5 or 6 years [average]. |

| So, so gorgeous! Your orchard is a work of art :) But hey, why does Bambi not wreak havoc around there? Branches too high? I'm going to have to decide on a deer strategy for my new little orchard. Bambi pruned my nectarine for me recently ;) She did a great job, actually, lol. But that will have to stop. |

| Thank you all! >>But hey, why does Bambi not wreak havoc around there?<< I put farm wire loop around when small, these trees are fairly large,...in the summer deer just nibble off leaves, moose will prune ends sometimes, in winter they do more damage, they can pull down branches because their diet is mostly woody plants. Most apple trees are taking a rest this year, some have a little.

| LOL..yeah, I always get a kick out of moose pictures,..surprises surprise, these guy's have no fear, not like deer, one tree I started to pick with a ladder in the evening, ..figured moose might clean it up over night, so then I lay the ladder down, V shape spreading both side of trunk and sticking beyond, ..moose didn't care! One thing about wildlife, they come and eat for only a short period,..not like us humans, the hunter and gatherer would kick in and clean up everything. Yes, these pictures are of my homebuild, using a W7 Sony camera, got two others out using Sony DSC- S600 and Sony S40, got cheap second hand, the hacking wiring soldering is the worst, haven't build anymore for a couple of year and I don't think I will build more. Here is a unique picture because two cameras fired the same time, ...the one on the left giving another light source from the flash. |

| Those are great shots of the orchard and wildlife! This area of ontario is pretty much that same idea; you live near any forest you have moose, deer rabbits and bears. Deer live in the middle of the city in patches of woodland and travel around the city using the bike paths. Ive almost hit them coming around a blind corner. These deer are fearless and didnt even flinch. People here feed them too much... then they wonder why they walk in the middle of the road or come into the city.... |

I do see what you mean about the flavor. Tastes like it would be good to cook with to some degree at least.... thats a ton of fruit indeed. Looks like youre getting a bit of an indian summer as well (knocking on wood). Hope winter doesnt hit to fast this year! |

| K Those pears and plums are a nice size. All the sage advice is to thin them to get large size fruit. These don't look like they were thinned. If you did thin.... then at what time and how much space between? Mike |

| Almost over with harvest this year,...will be juicing lots of Sept. Ruby apples. This from yesterday, we had a hard frost about 2 weeks ago, went down to around minus 6C. In a nutshell,....it was a short season, late spring and early Sept. frost,..other then that, a good warm summer with enough rain, hardly ever needed to water the veggie garden. |

| Konrad I think you should start a new 2014 orchard thread....It's going to be 2015 soon! Apples look good, mine always seem to have some sort of bug scarring on them. Did all your varieties have a chance to ripen fully with the short season this year? |

| Konrad- I'm slowly developing my own little mixed fruit orchard and for whatever reason I didn't have much interest in apples. You and you're incredible photos have single handedly changed my mind....who wouldn't be thrilled to have trees filled with large, beautiful, dense fruit like yours?!?! Even an amateur like me knows its not easy to get such large, perfectly shaped, unblemished apples! The fact that you do it so far north with such short seasons just makes it all the more impressive. Way to go, my friend. And thank you for sharing. You honestly have inspired me. |
