Why do I keep killing Asian pears?

I grow all types of fruit trees, pears apples plums etc, and with some success.

Every year I plant 1-2 Asian pears and they either die the first winter, or suffer significant dieback and show dead wood on the main trunk by spring, failing after leaf out.

Are they sensitive to something in particular that other pears aren't? Possibly acidity?

My other pears are fine. I did buy one larger sized 20th century that is now 4 years old. It fruits each year but hasn't grown much, maybe 6" in that four years.
