Apple from seed - pruning

sekans

Hi,

In early August 2013 I planted an apple seed into a small container of potting mix to see if it would sprout. It readily sprouted and has continually grown over the summer until now. It has reached about 90cm (3 feet) in height. Over the last month it has grown its first branch which has significantly slowed the growth of the leader. My question is, should I be removing this branch? If so, at what time of year should this be performed?

Please save the comments regarding the effectiveness of propagating apple trees from seed. I'm fully aware that the tree will most likely will not produce an apple similar to the one the seed came from.

Thank you in advance for your help!
