Matted strawberry plants w lots of brown leaves

My strawberry plants have become very dense and matted together. I did not realize I should have thinned them and possibly replanted them last year. They have a good bit of straw underneath them from last year. The winter was very cold and many of the leaves are brown (75%) but 25% are still green. I lost a few plants this year due to the frigid temperatures.

Should I remove the old straw? What about the dead leaves that are still intact? Should I thin the plants or should I just leave everything in place and add new straw before fruiting (to lift up the berries)? Thank you for any help you can give me.
