Look what we found under the melting snow

applehouse

We purchased a house this winter to find none of the apples or pears had been cleaned up under the fruit trees in the yard. Whatever the opossums didn't eat were left to rot. Now that the snow is melting we can see there is zero grass and thousands of mushy rotten apples.
Should we just cover with fresh dirt and plant new grass?
Just run them over with a mower and reseed?
If the old fruit isn't completely removed will diseases and bugs be really bad this year?

HELP!
