My peaches have very tough skin

I planted my peach tree and I got peaches last summer except when I harvested my peaches the skins were VERY tough. To the point of being unusable. I tried blanching them and nothing worked to soften the skin. What would cause this and is there something I could do to prevent this from happening this year?

Did you plant a seed or buy a tree? if bought, do you know the variety of your tree? where did you get it? How did you know the peaches were ripe?
