1/2 to 1" is "june drop" size. I guess you had a warm spring wherever you are - my pears are in full boom now. Anyway that would be my guess. Lack of pollination and problems from the freeze would usually manifest earlier.

You can never be sure about fruit trees. I had an apricot with a mother lode of blooms this spring which has set well for the last several years, but this year they all fell off and I don't see a single fruit on the tree wheres the neighboring apricots are all setting a lot.

scottfsmith. Thanks for your reply. Because they call it June drop I was assuming the drops would be during that month. Thanks for improving my knowledge. I have observed the Orient pear in my area for about 30 years. It blooms a little earlier than my Ayers and Hood pears but has an overlap with the Bradford and wild seeding from it. It sizes up rapidly and we can start picking in the last of July. My bagging the fruit may be shortening the ripening time a little (not sure). Some of the fine details such as the June drop just flew over my head. Thanks
