Do an aggressive prune job on them. I wouldn't fertilize unless your soil is not very good.

With most plantings,I've read that no fertilizer should be used in the hole.They should be fine.I think it was harvestman who posted about digging a shallow bowl instead of one with walls.That way the roots can spread out and grow better without hitting a hard surface. Brady

soil isn't great. I didn't fertilize last year, got about six inches of growth. I was able to take a large ball of dirt out with the roots so I didn't have to cut them back much. I also broke up the sides of the hole that I put them in so they shouldn't have a problem hitting a hard side wall.

The worst orchard disaster I've seen was from mixing fertilizer in the planting hole. Many dead trees and others half dead.
