I am interested in Grimes Golden and Baldwin because they are antique varieties that seem to be pretty well liked. Anyone here have them? what can you tell me about the apples compared to modern?

I used to buy Baldwins from an orchard that has since bit the dust, generally a pretty good large apple. They seemed at their best if not stored more than a couple months though. I know they are a triploid variety. Don't know much else.

I grow Grimes Golden. It's a hard large green/yellow apple, with very good taste. It's also a good pollinator. I like it better than Goldrush.

CC, Everything I read is Baldwin is a Large tree especially on its own rootstock and even with a semi-dwarf rootstock. Don't think you can get it on dwarf as it wants to be a larger tree so hope you have the room. I have tasted and its my kind of apple, Crisp and some acid. The Grimes Golden I haven't tasted but grafted several last year. Hope Rayrose is right, I grafted so many antique varieties last year and then started to ck pollinator's and found out I have very few that are self fertile.
