Brand-new apple grafts: how much cold and sun can they take?

Posted by jayco 5b NY (My Page) on

I have some just-potted apple grafts. I want to know if it's OK to leave them outside, how much cold they can take, and how much sun. If I leave them partly shaded is that OK? Or should I harden them off before putting them out? I'm not sure whether to treat them like trees or seedlings, so thanks for any advice.

Several day's in the shade then slowly move them to partly shaded. If they're very tender from being boxed up or coming from a warmer climate then hardening off would be a good idea.

Thanks, Do you think I could leave them inside for a few days, since I won't be able to move them for the next couple of days?

I would think so,...easy on light if they have leaves..then move them closer to the window.

OK, thanks very much.

They have no leaves. They were grafted probably a week or two ago.

So which would you pick: basement = lower light, cooler temps at night; or inside = more light and slightly warmer, say around 60?

Well,... now you want that graft to be pushed out to it's max growing condition, warm with good light, right to the window upstairs.
