Girdled Crabapple help

Posted by goudreau Me (My Page) on

After the snow melted away I found this :(

I cant believe I forgot to wrap it, It was the only one I forgot and of course this happens.

Its girdled all the way around but Im attempting to be optimistic and ask for any help with this. Maybe a graft union? Would it be worth the effort? I do love this weeping crabapple.

Thanks, -J

RE: Girdled Crabapple help

There is such a thing as a bridge graft, where you basically take 4 or 5 scions and graft them across the gap all around the trunk, from live wood to live wood, and hope that the tree will use these grafts to supplement its damaged trunk. I am not an expert but I know there are people have successfully used this technique to save trees. Look into it.
