need help with plum trees

i have some older plum trees in my yard i don't what type but i have some growing around them and i want to dig them up to move to a differnt area but im not sure when is the best time to do so and how much off the roots to dig up dont want to kill them help please

Best to do when dormant, depends how large these trees are, if they are less than 2 feet, a good shovel is probably fine, larger trees need more roots...

If you want to save the trees and are in Georgia it will be hard to do so unless you wait until fall. Then you can move them bare root by carefully diffing up as much root reasonably possible and lifting the tree.
