Planting Strawberries in Large Container

I have a large rubber horse watered that I plan on using to plant strawberries in. It is very large and deep. I have heard that the bottom can be filled with empty water bottles, so as not to use so much potting soil. Anyone have any experience or advice to offer?

That will work or you can also use empty buckets turned upside down . make sure the drain plug is out or drill more holes so the extra water can drain
