Right place for black lace, 7b/8

Have black lace and black beauty elderberrys to plant. In order to keep them close enough for pollenation and still give them plenty of space, I am considering putting one up on the deck in a large pot. Anyone have experience with these varieties? How close can I plant them? Would either of them do good in a pot? I have been advised that Sambucus Nigra in general is too vigorous for pots but these varieties are suposed to stay smaller. Please help.

i can tell you theyre pretty damn hardy. A neighbor a few blocks down has some in their yard, facing south, with no real wind breaks. Theyve survived above the snowline 4 years running. They are planted about 4 or 5 feet away from eachother, but the homeowners chop the flower stalks off.
