can this 40 yr. old apricot tree be pruned...?

We have a 40 yr. old dwarf/? miniature apricot tree ('Goldenglow'/ from Stark's) that has some top growth & new leaves & some delicious fruit every year (if it gets past frosts!). The growth the past few years is just on the top foot or so & the rest down to the ground is just wood branches. Can the tree top be pruned down more severely down to the wood area below the leaves/fruit level next year before the leaves come out? It seems it should have a bigger, bushier, leafier top... but after all these years I guess it is amazing to even be alive?! I tag all the trees with variety & date planted so know this age is correct for the tree. Not fond of the taste of apricots usually but this tree has some great tasting/flavor for an aprocot & would like to keep it going!
