air layering to speed fruiting tree

An explanation that I heard for why grafted trees fruit early is that the grafted wood is already a season or two old and is ready to be producing fruiting buds which gives it a head start towards fruiting.

If I understand this process correctly, my question is :

Can I get an, essentially, instant (almost) large fruiting second tree by air layering a large branch that I might have to prune off anyway.

Lets say that:
(1) I have a 1-2 inch caliper branch (2-4 years old) that I have to prune and throw away anyhow and
(2) This branch may have a nice set of secondary branches with fruiting wood already developed on it and
(3) So instead of cutting it off, I air layer a new root system and once formed I plant it and...
(4) voila... an instant 3-4 year old "ready to fruit" tree.

Seems too easy that I must have missed something !!!
