Black Raspberries and Orange Rust

Ernie

I just noticed today that my Jewel black raspberry is suffering from a serious case of orange rust. Interestingly enough, the Black Hawk that's three feet away shows no sign of infection whatsoever. I haven't dealt with rust before, so I did a bit of reading and was struck by this pointed statement in a fact sheet from Cornell's Plant Diagnostic Disease Clinic: "there are no efective fungicides for control of orange rust at this time." They recommend removing diseased plants, but I'm wondering if there's any point in trying a less drastic approach and starting by removing the infected canes (nearly all of them). Has anyone had success with this approach, or is it likely that the rust is systemic at this point and will simply spread from the root system to any new canes?
