Strawberry Bumper Crop

This is my 8th year raising strawberries and we finally got a bumper crop. We used raised beds. We planted in rows of Coir early last year. Then we planted without Coir. The 4 beds planted in rows of Coir are HUGE and covered in flowers. The bed without Coir but planted in a peat row, is pathetic. I wish I could find a local source for Coir because shipping is ridiculous.

Wow, it's been a few years since I've grown strawbs, but my patch was always far more open than that. To me, those look so crowded... have you actually had a bumper crop of berries, or is it so far a bumper crop of flowers?

I would think pure peat would be too acidic for the strawberries. Coir is fairly neutral. But I grow them with garden soil and peat no problem!

I was fortunate to find all the coir I could want, but it was second-hand, from a greenhouse growing tomatoes. They had it piled up high on more than 20 pallets. I didn't realize how great it was or I would have gotten more. Next year I'll fill up my van!
