Weed whacker vs. Apple tree

I had a stupid accident today. I hit one of my apple trees with a weed whacker. The tree is a little over a year old and is about 1" in diameter at the base. The weed whacker took a sizable chunk of bark off the tree and went down to the inner wood a little bit. The damage seems to go about half way around the tree, maybe a little more.

Anyone got any tips for how I can aid the tree? Should I wrap or seal the wound to prevent moisture from entering it, or does that not matter? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I would wrap it tightly with electrical tape. You could apply grafting healer sealant or other such compounds available. Any kind of wax could work in a pinch but close it up somehow, it is an invitation to disease and borers.
