Large Red Nodules on Cherry Branches (and ants)

I recently moved into a new home with a wonderful garden and am learning a lot very fast ... so my apologies if there is an obvious answer to this question.

On several of the lower branches -- on the woody stems -- there are large red nodules covering much of the branch. There are also a lot of very active ants running about them. Photo attached.

These seem very different than the small nectar nodules at the base of the leaves. Insight is appreciated.

Scale insects. The ants are harvesting the honeydew they excrete.

And now I've stumbled into a whole world of scale laid out by the our agriculture department. Who knew there would be such a variety.
