Grafting Persimmons

I bought a couple of bareroot persimmons this spring. They all got planted out, and basically did nothing. I went out to check on one of them, and there are suckers coming from below the graft line - I nicked the scion and it doesn't look like there's any green in the cambium at this point - so maybe a goner.

Anyways, the nursery told me they were on "Native american persimmon" which I assume is D. Virginiana. If I don't see any life in the next couple of weeks, I'd like to graft an asian variety back onto the suckers.Any suggestions on when? What method of grafting, and how to get scions?

JR,

You can ask the nursery to replace your trees. It might be to late to obtain kaki scions unless someones still have left over scions in the frig that they do not need. In the past, I had to dig down a bit below the union so I can do bark graft. You can learn how to bark graft on YouTube. Use parafilm to wrap it tightly so the scion will not dry out. Good luck.

Joppa, did you figure anything out for your persimmons?

Tore them out of the ground and potted them. Replaced them with potted plants....

I figure I'll graft something to the rootstocks (which still seem to be alive) in the spring.
