That's probably fire blight. Unfortunately one of the worst disease of pear. There's lots of information on the net.

Isn't it likely that this tree came from Starks already infected with fireblight?

I know here in Michigan the bartlett pear industry suffered enough to wipe out the industry in the '60's. Since then there have been more resistant varieties. Of those I understand the Ayers, Tennessee, Magness, Tennosui, Dabney etc, are available.

Thanks everyone. I had to cut the central leader completely out and one limb below where it was grafted to the tree. Starks said they will replace the tree but probably won't have them in stock until fall. I hope I don't loose any more limbs or I won't have much of a tree and will loose the first years growth. That's part of growing stuff I guess.

Get a copper fungicide right now and begin spray treatment if you're interested in saving it. Also spray nearby pears, apples and quinces.

That damage is not necessarily fireblight, fireblight goes after shoot tips primarily and the leaves look OK. Sometimes a bud will malfunction for some reason and die, I picked off a couple of those tonight on some apples. Even if is fireblight I would just pull that one off. Wait until you get some real shoot tip or blossom strikes to start worrying about fireblight.

Dirtguy, everybody here is speaking in good faith but with varying degrees of experience. I would have thought fireblight, but I tend to be fireblight phobic and Scott has corrected me before. Whenever he disagrees with me I rethink my position, and I would suggest listening closely to him as you consider your options.

Thanks marknmt, I think I will hold off for now and see what happens. I have a message in to Stark Bros so maybe they will get back with me with their suggestion.
