Is the potted tree dead?

My husband bought a nectarine tree for 7 dollars at the grocery store. It had no leaves on it. He bought it around the beginning of May. It still has no leaves on it. And it is still in the pot (not transplanted yet). Is the tree dead? How can we tell if it is worth keeping?

Scratch off the thin outer bark on the trunk and limbs. If it's brown underneath the tree is dead from that point up. If it's still green above the graft union it has a chance. But at this point in zone 7 that doesn't seem likely.
