Great pictures of a truly evil subject! I used to say that prickers and poison ivy were truly evil plants. I now must add CAR galls to my list. I've actually never seen a gall in person (even though I've been looking) around here... So, I don't know where my spores come from. Thanks for sharing! -Glenn

I find they are best prepared by skewering them shish-ka-bob style then cooking them with a cutting torch! Man those things gall me!

I wonder if they could pass off as a delicacy to some exotic food-adventurer.

I prefer the picture of mine however, it was riddled with birdshot holes from a shotshell blast!

Dear Dr.: They are the fruiting structures of one stage of a fungus refered to as Cedar Apple Rust (CAR). If you'd like a detailed description of CAR life cycle, just Google it. The rust has one phase where it lives on cedar trees as in the pictures above and a few other alternate hosts. The other life cycle phase occurs on apple trees (and perhaps some alternate hosts) and can do some pretty serious damage to apple trees.
