The leaves will be curled up as the plant emerges and greens up in the spring. The leaves unfold, and then they get flat. This plant looks healthy to me. You can mulch around the base with shredded tree leaves, or something similar, to help keep the weeds down. But that is not essential. It should begin to flower in June. If there are bees around, to pollinate the flowers, then you might see some green fruit in late June, and possibly some ripe berries in July.
