Not stink bugs they only suck juice. Are you sure it's not the deer? If there are deer around and no fence that's a likely candidate.

If there are major leaf losses and no insects, it's probably deer.

Nope, they'd eat the whole cluster if I know my deer, lol :D I have something hanging in the trees now that has been scaring them off well, too.

It looks like what grasshoppers would do, except that's later in the year here when they are big (and I don't know that they go that high up usually). Or a Japanese beetle or similar, except I haven't seen a darned thing, and various beetles usually also hit my roses.

Some leaves look cut in half, so that's a little unusual.
