Apple frost rings

I can see now how close it came to freezing out the whole crop, with most of the apples showing frost rings.

How can you tell? I think most of mine were in bloom when the coldest air came through, can it happen at that time?

I think it happens before they bloom, but I'm not really sure about that.

The fruitlets are elongated, with a constricted area around the center, like a waist. They should be apples, just funny-looking ones. It may make them unmarketable, but I only grow for myself.
