Help identifying cherry tree

My grandpa planted some cherry trees many years ago in the backyard. I had never noticed them produce fruit and assumed that they were ornamental trees, so I was surprised when I went out back today and saw that the tree was covered in fruit. My grandpa has since passed and I am not sure if these fruit are edible or not. Is there a way to identify the type of tree? Thanks for any assistance!

Kitten:

Those cherries look like Royal Anne, Emperor Francis, or Napoleon, all of which have a similar appearance. They are small, soft, yellow/pink cherries that are usually very sweet. They are very much edible.

Even if it were a decorative cherry, the fruit would be edible.

Doesn't look like a sweet cherry - leaves, stems and fruits all different - notice the lack of long stalks on the fruits. Sweet cherry cultivars listed above would have typical long stalks.

Yes thats not a sweet cherry as bboy points out. I believe it is a Nanking cherry which is edible. Google for pictures to verify.

What a gorgeous tree! And ripe with sentiment as well. Congratulations!

Yup...Nanking
All sweet and sour cherries have a stem, not Nanking, they look like glued to the branch.
These cherries on your tree are not ready, leave them on until they get dark red and they get better.
By the looks of it another 2 weeks.
Last year I had a good cluster of these.
