Grape Vine Habits

Recently I was in the central valley and I noticed that the really old grapevines were just stumps and weren't growing on any supports, and was wondering if this could be achieved in a smaller setting. Like I have grape vine growing in my yard at the moment and if I were to provide it no supports would it survive?

That method of pruning is called the fan system. The older vineyards didn't have a wire support system. You may want to support your vine for the first year or two with a stake to keep the top growth from pulling the new plant over. Prune yearly to keep an upright habit to your grape plant and enjoy your wine or table grapes.
