Just potted-up Farthing and Sweetcrisp

They were both in an 8-10 gallon pot for a year or so. Both plants are 2-3 years old. The Farthing is growing like a champ and had filled the pot with roots. The Sweetcrisp not so much. When I took it out of the pot, about half the mix just fell away. I repotted it anyway just to make sure it's in good soil. Is this normal? Does Sweetcrisp grow slower? Granted, I'm trying this in Z5. Last year I almost gave up on the Sweetcrisp, but it made an impressive growth spurt during summer. It's definitely still alive, but it looks like a lot of the branches didn't make it through winter in the garage. Will prune when I can really get a sense of how much of it is still growing.
