How many gallon of water for a mature apple tree?

We get some snow. Annual precipitation is 7-9 inches but the rainfall in our area for April-September over the last few three years has ranged from 0.01 - 0.32 in per month.

Soil is mostly sand down to below three feet. Don't know how far the sand goes.

We've two mature apple trees, 8 - 10 inches in diameter, radius and height over 15 feet. Ugly, need Pollarding(sp?).

How much water now? After trimming?

I'd use as much as it takes to get the soil moist more than a foot deep and then check occasionally to see how long it then takes to get dry to determine frequency.

That's assuming that the trees aren't reaching ground water, in which case they don't need irrigation.
