Can the bud be awake when budding or chip grafting apricots

Just wondering if the bud can be awake when chipping and bud grafting ??

I'm getting mixed answers . It's still early spring up here .i plan on using two trees that are full awake

I would say that you might get by with buds that are swelling. But once they even begin to push leaves, I think it's too late. They need to heal up before they can transport water to the leaves and green tissues. If they are losing water before they heal, the bud will dry up and die.
