How/When/If does one spread a tight crotch on bark-grafted fruit tree branches that have near vertical insertion points? I know I can prune for outward facing buds but have read that there will always be risk of breakage from fruit weight with any narrow angle branch. Last year I tried the clothespin technique in late summer on a branch I grafted that spring and it failed - don't want to make that mistake again...! Please let me know what method has worked for you.
