Can fruit trees be manually pollinated?

So I have a young Harrow Sweet pear tree that is in second leaf this spring and has about 5 blossoms on it. Its neighbor, Aurora Pear, has not put out any blossoms...me being a little impatient and also reading how precocious Harrow Sweet pear is, thought I might try my hand at manually trying to pollinate it with the blossoms of a large pear tree located about 1 mile from my house. I basically just rubbed the blossoms together. Any of you have any experience in this actually working?
