Saving Apple Rootstock for Next Year

This was my first year grafting. I have some extra semi-dwarf rootstock leftover and I'm not sure how to best save it for next year. I have the rootstock temporarily planted in a large box filled with dirt, but there's too many in such a small space.

I read a suggestion elsewhere in the forum to plant each one in a five gallon bucket. Does that sound right?

If I plant them in the ground, how close together could I space them?

Would it be okay to plant them in the shade?
