I bought a couple female kiwis (issai, Anna, Chang bai), and picked up a male that was in the same section as them. Male is labeled 'arctic beauty' which I now understand won't work. Conundrum is this- male plant doesn't look anything like arctic beauty. Is it arguta? Any way to tell if male or female?

You can't tell if its male or female until it flowers. I would buy another male to be on the safe side. I have two different arguta males for insurance in case one dies. Males can be pruned way back, about 1/5th the size of the female. Scott

Thanks Scott. Am I right in that it looks like an arguta and not a kolotmika?

If in doubt, return it. Northwoodswis

Well it doesn't look like "Arctic Beauty" (male) to me. The leaves on mine are more or less heart-shaped. Those leaves look more like my female kolomikta ("Red Beauty"), although I don't have the serrations on the edges--but neither do any of my arguta females except for "Issai". I'm sure there are many variations out there. There's really no way to be sure without flowers :-(

yes that plant was definitely mislabelled, it is however an arguta but is it a male????? you wont know until it flowers in 4 to 6 years :( for the time it takes these darn things to hook on and flower I would take it back! Order a male from a reputable nursery if you have to.

It's weird, I went back to SouthernStates last night, and they had a whole bunch of plants that look just like mine, and are labled Arctic Beauty. Thinking maybe the nursery just screwed up tagging the whole order.
