Blueberry Question

Hi all, I used to have a house in Maine, and when we picked wild blueberries they were not huge. They were tiny in fact but oh so tasty. Can you buy these bushes or not? I remember there was high bush and low bush. The low bush blueberries were almost like a thick ground cover. I really don't want those. They were very difficult to pick. Thanks, Mrs. G

Mrs G...do an internet search on varieties or past posts here. Get varieties that are good for your area. See Dave Wilson Nursery/blueberries.

Do you mean hucklenerries? Yes, but they may be small. Various places sell them. Oikos specializes in wild fruit. They have Wisconsin Huckleberries. probably a very small plant. They seem to sell small plants a lot...
Raintree has them too!

Here is a link that might be useful: Wisconsin Hucks

One blueberry variety that is noted for intense flavor is Rubel. This cultivar originated with a wild plant found in New Jersey, I think. We don't have one yet, but maybe this will be the year that I find one for sale around here. From your description, it sounds like you are looking for half-high shrubs. You might try Northland variety, and leave the fruit on the shrub for a few extra days so it can develop full flavor.

Drew: Oh my, now I'm confused. I looked up Huckleberry and sure enough, 'wild' Maine highbush blueberries look just like them. Do huckleberries taste like blueberries?

ericwi: I am looking for 'wild' Maine blueberries. They are not shiney. They are opaque. I do not remember the stems being red. They grew about four and a half feet tall. The berries are the size of 'petit pois'. Mrs. G
